Table of Contents

A website menu serves as a navigational tool for visitors to quickly and easily find the content they are looking for. Editing your WordPress menu is easier than you might think, and can be done in just a few simple steps. Read on to learn how to customize your WordPress menu so that it presents the perfect roadmap for your website visitors.

Step 1: Log in to Your Dashboard

To get started, log into your WordPress dashboard with your username and password. On the left side of the page, you will see a list of options. Select “Appearance” and then click “Menus” from the drop-down list.

Step 2: Create a New Menu

You will now see an area where you can create a new menu or edit an existing one. If this is your first time customizing your WordPress menu, select “Create a new menu” at the top of the page and give it a name you’ll recognize (e.g., Main Menu). Then click “Create Menu” to continue.

Step 3: Add Pages & Categories

Now it’s time to add pages and categories to your new menu by selecting them from the left-hand column. You can also type keywords into the “Search” bar if there are specific pages or categories that you want to add. When you find what you’re looking for, simply check off each box and click “Add to Menu.”

Step 4: Rearrange Items

Once all of your desired items have been added, it’s time to organize them in order from top to bottom by clicking on each item and dragging it up or down within the list of items on the right side of the screen. This will determine their placement within the actual navigation bar on your website once you’re finished editing.

Step 5: Label Navigation Items

The next step is labeling each navigation item that appears in your WordPress menu so that they clearly communicate their purpose when viewed on your website’s navigation bar (e.g., Home, Contact Us). To do this, simply click on each item within the right-hand column and enter a label in the corresponding text box at the bottom of that same column before continuing onto step 6 below.

Step 6: Assign Drop-Down Menus & Sub-Items

If any of your navigation items should contain sub-items with drop-down menus attached, simply drag those sub-items directly underneath its parent item (i.e., any navigation item located above) before continuing onto step 7 below. Keep in mind that only one level deep subcategories are supported by WordPress; if you’d like more complex drop down menus containing multiple layers/levels deep subcategories, consider using plugins such as Max Mega Menu instead!

Step 7: Check Display Settings

Before saving all of these changes, make sure that each item has “Top Level” selected under “Display Location” inside its corresponding settings box located at the bottom right corner of each item’s row within right-hand column (unless otherwise desired). Once everything looks correct here, proceed onto step 8 below!

Step 8: Save Your Changes

After double checking all settings one final time, save all changes by clicking “Save Menu” located at very bottom right corner of page before proceeding onto last step below!

Step 9: Assign Your New Menu

Now it’s time assign this newly created/edited menu as primary navigation bar for entire website by selecting it from drop down list found under “Theme Locations” section which appears at very top left corner page after scrolling up slightly from previous location mentioned above! Once selected here, just hit save again before enjoying brand new custom WordPress menu which now awaits visitors upon arrival!

Conclusion

With just nine easy steps outlined above, editing an existing or creating a brand new WordPress menu is now easier than ever before! By following these instructions closely—and double checking settings along way—you’ll be able enjoy fresh look feel site almost immediately with minimal effort required on part!
