How to Get Custom Taxonomy in WooCommerce

Table of Contents

For those who are starting an online business, building an e-commerce website can be a daunting task. However, with the help of WooCommerce, an e-commerce plugin for WordPress, creating an online store is made easy. WooCommerce is a powerful platform that allows you to customize your online store according to your needs. In this blog post, we will guide you on how to get custom taxonomy in WooCommerce.

Before we dive into the process of getting custom taxonomy in WooCommerce, let’s first define what a taxonomy is. In WooCommerce, taxonomy means a way of categorizing products based on their characteristics, such as color, size, and brand. While WooCommerce comes with built-in taxonomies, such as product categories and tags, it allows you to create your own custom taxonomy.

To get custom taxonomy in WooCommerce, you need to use a code snippet. There are two ways to add a code snippet to your WooCommerce website: through your functions.php file or through a plugin. If you choose to add a code snippet through your functions.php file, navigate to Appearance > Theme Editor > functions.php. Paste the code snippet that defines your custom taxonomy at the end of the file. If you prefer to use a plugin, download and activate the Code Snippets plugin. Then, navigate to Snippets > Add New. Give your snippet a name and paste the code that defines your custom taxonomy.

Once you have added your custom taxonomy, you can now assign it to your products. To do this, navigate to Products > Categories. Then, add a new category or edit an existing one. You will see your custom taxonomy listed under the “Product Category” section. Tick the box next to your custom taxonomy and save your changes.

Now that you have added your custom taxonomy and assigned it to your products, you can display it on your online store. You can do this by adding a new product attribute. Navigate to Products > Attributes. Add a new attribute and give it a name. Under “Type,” select “Custom product attribute.” Under “Values,” add the terms that you want to use for your attribute. Finally, assign your attribute to your products by ticking the box next to your custom taxonomy under the “Product data” section when adding or editing a product.

Conclusion

By following the steps we have outlined above, you can now get custom taxonomy in WooCommerce. Adding a custom taxonomy to your online store allows you to categorize your products based on your own criteria, making it easier for your customers to find what they are looking for. With WooCommerce’s flexibility, you can customize your store according to your needs, making it stand out from the rest.
